How can you help people access the land responsibly and keep to the Countryside Code?

Most people will use gates and stiles and follow obvious routes, way marks and signs. They can be good ways of managing access, by helping guide people and allowing you to predict where they are likely to be. Consider gates where you can because people find them easier to use than stiles.

Clear and polite guidance will encourage respect for your wishes. For example, telling visitors about management means they can avoid getting in your way.

Your local authority or National Park Authority can advise you about managing access. They may also offer help, for example, with gates, stiles and signs. You need permission from your Highway Authority or National Park Authority to put new gates or stiles on public rights of way.

CCW promotes the Countryside Code to encourage visitors to enjoy and respect the countryside. You can also use the Countryside Code to help inform people who visit your land.
